As the 2025 National Basketball League (NBL) season draws closer, the UCU Canons and UCU Lady Canons have made significant roster changes in preparation for the new campaign. With fresh talent joining the squads, both teams are focused on competing at the highest level when the league tips off on March 14.

Lady Canons Embrace New Era

The UCU Lady Canons have undergone a major transition following the departure of key players, including former captain Shakirah Nanvubya, Aziida Nabayuga, Tracy Namugosa, Prosper Anyine, and Caroline Nakato. In response, the team has brought in promising young talent to rebuild and remain competitive.

Among the new signings are Zoe Atek (Power Forward, St. Noa Girls), Sarah Namele (Center, Nabisunsa Girls), and Ciela Igiraneza (Point Guard, Burundi). The team has also secured Asacha Mariam (Small Guard, Buddo SS), Nalwadda Sharifah (Point Guard, Naalya SS – Lugazi), Saima Christine (Point Guard, St. Mary’s Kitende), and Kauma Bridget (Small Forward, Seroma Christian High School).

Head coach Nicholas Natuhereza remains optimistic despite the squad changes.

“We lost five or six players who had been around for a while, which means we are going into a rebuild. We are still in the recruitment process, looking for replacements and reinforcements to strengthen the squad,” said Natuhereza.

Despite losing a key leader in Nanvubya, the Lady Canons’ leadership remains strong with Hajjarah Najjuko continuing as captain and Shillah Lamunu will be stepping in as co-captain.

Canons Add International and Local Talent

The UCU Canons have also seen notable departures, including Kevin Kasobya, Jerry Kayanga, Peter Sifuma, and Abraham Isiayagi. To reinforce the team, UCU has recruited a blend of international and local talent, ensuring squad depth across all positions.

The new signings include Ariho Amara (Point Guard, Livingstone), Muganzi Daniel (Point Guard, Watoto), Dushime Flore (Point Guard, Burundi), Lihumi Jimmy (Power Forward, Sommet), and Chiedozie Raluchukwu (Center, Nigeria). Additionally, Tadeo Onyango (Power Forward) joins the team after a playing hiatus.

The Canons will maintain continuity in leadership with Ibanda Lwabanga remaining as captain and Joel Kayiira will be serving as co-captain.

“We have four to five new players joining the team, not just to replace those who left but to strengthen our overall squad depth,” said Natuhereza.

Preseason Friendlies and Final Preparations.

To fine-tune their squads ahead of the season, the Canons and Lady Canons have played a series of friendly matches. Both teams faced JT Lady Jaguars, while additional games were scheduled against Rezlife Saints and Seroma High School. These matchups have provided an opportunity for new players to integrate into the team while helping the coaching staff assess key areas for improvement.

Aiming for the Playoffs.

UCU has consistently been one of the most competitive teams in the NBL, with both the Canons and Lady Canons making deep playoff runs last season. The Lady Canons finished as runners-up, falling 4-2 to the JKL Lady Dolphins in the finals, while the Canons secured third place after a 65-62 victory over the Namuwongo Blazers in the third-place playoff.

“For me, that was a big achievement, considering we have young players who balance academics with basketball. With the team evolving every year, it’s never easy,” Natuhereza reflected.

Looking ahead, he remains confident in UCU’s ability to remain competitive.

“Our goal is always to be in the playoffs and push for the title. If we win, we celebrate; if not, we aim to finish as high as possible. Winning is never guaranteed, but we want to compete at the highest level.”

With fresh energy, strong leadership, and renewed determination, the UCU Canons and Lady Canons are ready to take on the 2025 NBL season.
