The UCU Doves are gearing up to participate in the 3rd Zone V Volleyball Club Championship, scheduled to take place in Kampala from February 26 to March 4, 2025.
This prestigious tournament will feature top clubs from 12 African nations, with matches hosted at the Lugogo Indoor Arena and the Old Kampala Sports Arena. During a media briefing on February 17, 2025, at the Uganda Olympic Committee headquarters, Uganda Volleyball Federation President Sadik Nasiwu announced that preparations are well underway to ensure a successful event.
Joseph Odong, chairperson of the local organizing committee, stated, “We have finalized the two venues, and so far, 20 clubs have confirmed participation, with entry closing on February 21 ahead of the technical committee meeting.” He stated.
The refereeing team is also set for the competition. Referee Delegate Innocent Komakech noted, “For every regional event, there is always a legacy program; this time we intend to involve our national referees in this competition as scorers and court managers, as officiation is limited to international referees.” He noted.
The UCU Doves are eager to showcase their skills against some of the region’s elite teams, bringing their competitive spirit from the National Volleyball League to the international stage. Head coach Juma Osunge expressed confidence in the team’s preparation. “We are preparing to face top teams, and our game plan is not going to change. The addition of two rookies, Blair Owomugasho and Fredricko Mujinya, is to put up a strong challenge.” He said.
Coach Osunge further emphasised the importance of this championship for player development: “Our ambition for Zone V is to expose the boys to the games, and because they have been performing well in the previous three seasons, it is their time to compete on the regional level.” He said.
As the tournament approaches, the UCU Doves are focused on making a significant impact and representing the university with pride on this prominent platform.
